Achieving Chartered Financial Planner Status

The idea of achieving the ‘gold standard’ of technical expertise, as the Chartered Financial Planner qualification is known, was something that always appealed to me.

It wasn’t until I joined BpH in July 2018, however, that I felt my journey to becoming Chartered would be fully encouraged, supported and appreciated.

Becoming Chartered has meant taking 14 exams in total and an estimated 1,300 + study hours to complete. Coordinating this commitment around full time work, family and any semblance of leisure time has meant my journey has taken over seven years from start to finish, and had me doubting my commitment on more than one occasion!

However, given I’m now able to reflect on the journey, I’m incredibly satisfied and relieved! The qualification has deepened my understanding on the issues we come across with client work daily and I certainly feel much better prepared in my current role to assist/collaborate with the planners on a much wider range of technical scenarios.

But the nature of the job is that the learning never stops. There will be other exams I will probably consider in the future to either expand my knowledge base further or to ensure I keep up to date with ever-changing legislation. I know BpH will always be supportive of the idea. I just need to convince my wife of the same!

I joined BpH Wealth in 2018:

I am part of the paraplanning team providing technical support to the Financial Planners.

My role predominantly consists of supporting Michael and Phillip to create and implement comprehensive solutions across an array of financial planning areas. This includes technical research, provider comparisons, cashflow and report preparation.

I have worked in UK financial services since I relocated from Australia in 2013 and in Australian financial services for two years before that. Prior to that, I was a golf professional for over 10 years.

I enjoy the diversity of my role as the needs of our clients are often quite varied. I love playing a part in helping people, especially when it comes to such an important (and often stressful) area of people’s lives. It’s a nice feeling to know that I’ve been a part of helping someone achieve their objectives and make that part of their life a little better.

Key achievements:

I’ve successfully passed all my level 4 and level 6 exams at first attempt.

Achieved Chartered Financial Planner status in December 2021.

In my spare time:

I enjoy running our dog virtually every day and I take a keen interest in most sports. I also get plenty of exercise following our toddler son and I am looking forward to meeting our new baby in the coming weeks.
